Web Design Mistakes
Written by Daniel Maddox
Jul 13, 16Web Design is a complicated topic to discuss. You will find everyone has an opinion of what is right and what is wrong. iST Digital is going to be listing the biggest mistakes you can do in design and why you should never do these!
People have a lot of different opinions when it comes to certain areas of web design. A lot of people think a website needs to be very modern, with sleek design throughout. Others say that is not at all important, and you can have anything anywhere you want on the page, and people will still use it. Parts of both of these are correct, however, it does depend on the business or industry that site is trying to showcase. Although they are two very extreme opinions, iST Digital wants to break down for you the worst possible things you can do to a site’s web design.
1. Small Font
Hands down, the first mistake people make when making a site is having the font way too small that you are unable to read it. It wasn’t a bad thing a few years back, though. Most websites back in the day use to use 12px size font, and that was the norm. However, as time has gone on, people have noticed that when you have computers ranging from 15” to 30” screens, size 12px is way too small to read!
Another factor to focus on with this issue is that when a customer or client goes on your website, you only have a few seconds to grab that person’s attention. So if you have text content that is so small, they will just simply exit your page.
So to resolve this issue lets list what you can do:
- Have big headlines that draw the person in.
- Write content that is useful or interesting for the reader.
- Big fonts for headlines are essential!
- Make sure that your body copy is large enough to display comfortably on any size monitor
2. Low Contrasting Fonts
To keep in line with the previous mistake is using low contrast fonts. What we mean by this is when you use a font that is coloured lighter than the already light background or when you use a dark coloured font on a dark background. This is a huge mistake that a lot of older websites still use today!
It is essential that you make your content readable and not make the reader strain their eyes out just to try and figure out what has been published. To find out more about web design Click Here
3. Basic Layout Structure Violations
This is something that irritates every user of the web. Visitors that go on your page already have the basic structure of the website predetermined. Logos and taglines are on the top left of the page and the menu is to the right of that. They’re also used to seeing an about page and a contact page somewhere in the menu so that they have easy access to what your business is about and how to communicate with you. If these basic layout elements are not in the usual place, they immediately become confused.
Some designers and developers decide to be super creative with the site structure and come up with different ways to display these elements. They may put these in the middle of the page or on a side you usually do not look at first. Sometimes, these new approaches work, but is highly likely that they wont. To put this nicely and in most cases, it is much better to follow common design principles then to break them.
So to wrap this all up, although we could discuss many more mistakes, it is essential that your text is displayed properly, not too small and not too big, just right to be displayed beautifully on any screen size. Do not use low contrasting font colours and make sure to follow basic web structure to make your site look professionally made. Here at iST Digital, our design team makes sure we follow these guidelines we have discussed and to make sure we do what is best for your business.
